    Easy Mexican Hot Chocolate - Ingredients

    • Instant hot chocolate mix
    • 1 squirt chocolate syrup
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • pinch chili powder
    • 1/4 cup cold milk
    • 3/4 cup boiling water

    Atole de Chocolate - Ingredients

    • 2 cups water, boiled and cooled slightly
    • 2 cups milk
    • 1/4 cup masa harina (a Mexican flour)
    • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
    • 1 square of Mexican chocolate, crushed
    • 3 oz (or 3 cones) piloncillo (Mexican brown sugar)
    • cinnamon stick
    • optional: 1 pinch of anise seed, ground (tip: use the back of a spoon to grind)

    Preparation

     

    Easy Mexican Hot Chocolate - Preparation

    1. In a large mug, mix 3 heaping spoonfuls hot chocolate mix, a squirt of chocolate syrup, cinnamon, and chili powder.
    2. Add the boiling water and stir well.
    3. Pour in the milk.
    4. top with optional whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon and serve!

    Atole de Chocolate - Preparation

    1. In a saucepan, mix or whisk the masa harina into the warm water until mixed well.
    2. Add milk, chocolate, piloncillo and anise.
    3. Bring to a simmer and whisk until chocolate is melted and sugar is dissolved.
    4. Serve hot in a mug with a cinnamon stick
