German Black Forest Cake Recipe
Black Forest Cake has long been a popular cake in Germany and Austria, and is now a favorite in the United States. Usually Black Forest Cake is made up of several layers of dark chocolate cake, with whipped topping and cherries in between the layers. In Germany traditionally liquors such as Kirschwasser are added to the cake, but we leave that out of our easy kid-friendly version!
Supplies Needed
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (the darker the better!)
- 1 tub (8 oz) whipped cream topping
- 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
- 1 can cherry pie filling
- 1 cup chocolate chips or shaved chocolate
- maraschino cherries (optional)
- sprinkling of powdered sugar (optional)

- Prepare chocolate cake following directions on package, making 2 round 9-inch layers.
- Cool cake thoroughly.
- Place one cake layer on a plate and spread with a third of the Kool Whip and half of the cherry pie filling
- Stack the second cake layer on top, frost with remaining whipped topping and the rest of the cherry pie filling
