German Hansel and Gretel Gingerbread House

German Hansel and Gretel Gingerbread House

In the German fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, the children lose their way in the forest and come upon the gingerbread house of the witch and begin eating.   Here you can make your own gingerbread house to eat!

  • World Library: Germany
  • Language: German
  • Supplies Needed

    • Milk carton – large or small.  If you have a large carton cut off the bottom to make it a shorter ‘house’.
    • Graham crackers
    • Frosting (see ingredients and recipe below)
    • Sprinkles and candies for decoration.

    Preparation

For frosting, beat together the following:

    • 1 pound or 16 ounces powdered sugar
    • ¼ Teaspoon salt
    • ¼ Cup milk
    • 1 Teaspoon vanilla
    • 1/3 Cup butter at room temperature

    1. Apply frosting to a side of your milk carton.
    2. Stick a graham cracker on top of the frosted side.  It will stick to the frosting.
    3. Continue all around the sides and on the roof until your milk carton is covered in graham crackers.
    4. Using the frosting as glue, attach sprinkles and candies to the graham crackers to make windows, doors and a garden.
