The Benefits of Billingual and Multilingual Early Learning

Click here for information regarding the proven benefits of early language learning

Our monthly newsletters for Circletime Kids Members feature interesting articles relating to hot topics regarding multilingual and multicultural early learning.

Research has clearly shown that even a cursory introduction to other languages and cultures at an early age is beneficial to a child's social, emotional and cognitive development. Through our own experiences as parents and educators, we strongly agree with these findings.

There are many resources and products available for those who are interested in learning more about raising bilingual children or carrying their bilingual or cultural education further - we list many of these resources in the links section of this site.

Just a few of the widely recognized benefits of a bilingual education are listed below. If you would like to read more information regarding the many ways exposure to foreign cultures and language can benefit your child, a good resource is the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Cognitive Benefits of Bilingualism and Cultural Learning

  • Bilingualism increases mental flexibility for children by introducing them to the concept that there are two or more words for a single object or idea.
  • Bilingual children are more willing and able to learn a third language, and show an increased analytical orientation to language in general.
  • Children who study a second language on average score higher on verbal standardized tests conducted in English.
  • Bilingual children typically perform better in math and logic skills than monolingual children.
  • Learning a second language helps children develop problem-solving skills and mathematical ability.

Social and Emotional Benefits of Bilingualism and Cultural Learning

  • Opening childrens' social horizons to include other types of cultures and people helps them to appreciate their own culture and imagine the possibilities of other places, thereby building self-esteem and creativity.
  • Bilingual children maintain a strong sense of their own identity while developing sensitivity towards other people and cultures.
  • Since bilingual children need to be aware of which language to speak in a particular situation, they are often more attentive to the needs of the listener.
  • Helping our children to understanding that all people are beautiful and unique, and learning to appreciate the similarities and differences between us all is a vital step towards establishing a more tolerant and peaceful world community.
