Mexican Hot Chocolate
(Atole de Chocolate)
Atole de Chocolate, a traditional Mexican chocolate drink, has a distinctly unique flavor from the Mexican chocolate and is thicker than American hot chocolate. If you have a store nearby where you can find the Mexican ingredients, try our traditional Atole de Chocolate recipe below!

Easy Mexican Hot Chocolate -
Ingredients
- Instant hot chocolate mix
- 1 squirt chocolate syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- pinch chili powder
- 1/4 cup cold milk
- 3/4 cup boiling water
Preparation
- In a large mug, mix 3 heaping spoonfuls hot chocolate mix, a squirt of chocolate syrup, cinnamon, and chili powder.
- Add the boiling water and stir well.
- Pour in the milk.
- top with optional whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon and serve!
Atole de Chocolate -
Ingredients
- 2 cups water, boiled and cooled slightly
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup masa harina (a Mexican flour)
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 square of Mexican chocolate, crushed
- 3 oz (or 3 cones) piloncillo (Mexican brown sugar)
- cinnamon stick
- optional: 1 pinch of anise seed, ground (tip: use the back of a spoon to grind)
Preparation
- In a saucepan, mix or whisk the masa harina into the warm water until mixed well.
- Add milk, chocolate, piloncillo and anise.
- Bring to a simmer and whisk until chocolate is melted and sugar is dissolved.
- Serve hot in a mug with a cinnamon stick
