Flan - traditional Mexican dessertback to traditional Mexican children's recipes
Flan
(Mexican Custard)

Flan is a rich custard dessert which is a favorite in Mexico! Mexican Flan has a runny caramel top, as opposed to the French Crème brûlée, which has a crispy top. Otherwise, the two dishes are very similar.

This is our easy Mexican Flan recipe that you can try at home with your kids! You can also try a variety of instant flan mixes, available at your grocery store.

Ingredients

  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 can condensed milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 4 eggs, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Preparation

  1. preheat oven to 325 degrees
  2. Melt sugar in a skillet until light brown, pour into a glass pie pan or 9" baking dish
  3. Blend milks, eggs and vanilla until mixed (don't over-beat), pour into the dish.
  4. Place the glass dish into a large baking pan.
  5. Pour about 1/2 inch of water into baking pan, surrounding the glass dish.
  6. Bake the flan at 325 degrees for about 1 hour
  7. cool and refrigerate until ready to serve
  8. To serve your flan, gently place your serving plate upside down on top of your flan and flip over to transfer your flan to the plate. Slice, and serve!
