Black Forest Cherry Cake -
Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte
Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte or black forest cherry cake is a popular dessert throughout Germany and Austria. Traditionally it is a layered cake but you can also do just a single rectangle cake.
Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- 1 can cherry pie filling
- 1 tub (8 oz) whipped cream topping such as Cool Whip
- Optional toppings such as chocolate chips or fresh or maraschino cherries
Preparation
- Prepare chocolate cake following directions on package, making either 1 rectangle cake or 2 9 inch round cakes.
- Cool cake thoroughly.
- Spread on the cherry pie filling. If layering cakes, use half the pie filling on the first cake.
- Top with whipped topping.
- If layering place the second cake on top of the first cake and repeat.
- Decorate with chocolate chips or cherries.
