Pastel de Tres Leches
Tres Leche Cake
Tres Leche Cuppie Cakes
Pastel de Tres Leches, also known as Tres Leche Cake or Three Milk Cake, is a delicious cake whose origin is attributed to Mexico dating back to the 19th century. The recipe evolved during World War II to include canned condensed milk.
Our easy kid-friendly Tres Leche Cake recipe uses instant cake mix! You can also make fun Tres Leche Cupcakes based on the recipe below.
Ingredients
- 1 box yellow or white cake mix (with pudding if available)
for absorbed topping:
- 1 can evaporated milk
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 pint heavy whipping cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
For frosting / finishing:
- 1 tub whipped topping (Cool Whip) or freshly whipped cream
- optional additional toppings:
shaved coconut, chopped macadamia nuts, cherries, and/or pineapple
Preparation
- bake your cake (or cupcakes) as directed on the box, allow to cool
- poke holes all over the cake (or the top of your cupcakes) with a fork - this is fun for the kids!
- while they are poking, mix your tres leches (three milks) and vanilla together
- pour mixture all over cake (or atop each cupcake), place in refrigerator for about an hour to allow to absorb the mixture
- frost your tres leche cake (or cupcakes) with whipped topping
- optional - sprinkle with coconut shavings, and add macadamia nuts, cherries and/or pineapple!
