French Toast or Pain Perdu
French toast is a popular breakfast throughout Europe and North America. However it is not necessarily French in origin as there are many different preparations in many cultures. It has traditionally been a way to use day old bread hence the French translation – Pain Perdu or Lost Bread.
Ingredients
- 4 Slices of bread
- 2 Eggs
- 2 Tablespoons milk
- 1/4 Teaspoon vanilla extract
- a sprinkle of cinnamon
- Butter
- Syrup
Preparation
- Stir together eggs and milk until mixed.
- Add vanilla and cinnamon to the egg mixture.
- Heat your skillet on medium heat with a pat of butter.
- When the butter is melted, dip your bread slice in the egg mixture, shake off excess and add to pan.
- Fry on both sides until golden.
- Repeat for other bread slices and serve with butter and syrup.
